Food and Nutrition

At Great Expectations we like to see busy children, taking part in all that we have to offer and that means they need to feel healthy and full of energy. We believe that a healthy, balanced diet is crucial in supplying the nutrients needed to support rapidly developing bodies and minds and we have created our menus to reflect this with the inclusion of lots of fresh produce.

Our menus change in order to offer children a wide variety of tastes and textures and to take advantage of seasonal foods which are at their best at different times of the year.

We are committed to providing the most nutritious meals possible for children and work hard to develop tasty recipes that are low in sugar, salt, saturated fats additives and preservatives.

However, we believe that child nutrition is about far more than offering wholesome food. We also strive to promote a positive food culture throughout the nursery. This involves:

  • Consideration of the environment in which the food is eaten so that a happy and relaxed atmosphere is achieved
  • Creating an enabling environment where children can select food and serve themselves where appropriate
  • Food education activities such as growing vegetables and cooking, are also carefully planned so that children develop an understanding of where food comes from and why it is good for them
